Annual Big Island Challenge - Hilo
Hilo high school held the Annual Big Island Challenge from February 17 to February 18. The weekend consisted of four competitions, Color guard, Drill, Archery, and Raiders. Konawaena, Menehune, Kealakehe, Farrington, Moanalua, and Waimea schools were invited to participate. Cadets from each school competed to the best of their abilities, demonstrating their teamwork, strength, and motivation. The competition ended with Farrington as the number one victors overall.

Hilo High JROTC
presents Colors for HHSA basketball State Championship
On February 19th, the 1st Viking Battalion Color Guard presented the colors at the Hilo High School New Gym for the first round of the HHSA Basketball State Championship between the Hilo High School Vikings and the Nanakuli Golden Hawks.
Following the presentation of the colors, the cadets were presented with a sideline view of the game with the Golden Hawks beating the Vikings 50-45.

Waimea Menehune Challenge
On March 22nd, 8 of our cadets on our Raider's team flew out to Kauai to participate in the Menehune challenge, hosted by Waimea High School. The challenges consisted of Rope Bridge, a Team Fitness Test, Spider Crossing, an Obstacle Course, a 2 Mile Beach Run, a Canoe "Battle" Paddle, and a 200 yard Swim. Our 8 cadets were split into two teams of four, a mixed team and a males team. The overall winners of the Challenge were the cadets of Waimea High school.

What is Army JROTC?

Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps
Our Mission
The mission of Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is to motivate young people to become better citizens. The program achieves this by instilling in its participants the values of citizenship, leadership, character, and community service. Army JROTC aims to develop students' leadership potential, promote their physical fitness, and teach them the importance of academic achievement. The program also fosters patriotism and encourages students to become responsible members of their communities. By providing opportunities for personal growth and development, Army JROTC prepares its participants for success in both military and civilian careers.
Army ROTC Scholarship
The Army ROTC Scholarship is available to high school seniors who have participated in Army JROTC for at least two years. The scholarship covers full tuition and fees, as well as a monthly stipend for living expenses. In exchange, recipients commit to serving in the Army as commissioned officers after graduation. The Army ROTC Scholarship provides a unique opportunity for students to pursue higher education while also preparing for a career in the military.
JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl Scholarship
The JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl Scholarship is available to Army JROTC cadets who excel academically and demonstrate leadership potential. The scholarship covers the cost of attending a week-long leadership camp, as well as a $2,000 college scholarship. Recipients also have the opportunity to compete in a national academic bowl competition. The JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl Scholarship provides a valuable opportunity for students to develop their leadership and academic skills while also earning scholarship money.
National Society of Pershing Rifles Scholarship
The National Society of Pershing Rifles Scholarship is available to Army JROTC cadets who are members of the Pershing Rifles fraternity. The scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement, leadership potential, and community service. Recipients receive a cash award to help fund their college education. The National Society of Pershing Rifles Scholarship is a prestigious award that recognizes outstanding achievement and commitment among Army JROTC cadets.
Civilian Employment Opportunities
Army JROTC also provides civilian employment opportunities for its graduates. Many employers value the leadership and teamwork skills that Army JROTC instills in its participants, making them attractive candidates for a variety of jobs. Core Abilities
JROTC's core abilities are essential skills every cadet needs for future success. Program Outcomes
JROTC program outcomes describe what cadets will know and be able to do upon completion of the program. These include acting with integrity, engaging in civic and social concerns, graduating prepared for career pathways, making positive decisions, and valuing the military and service organizations. These outcomes are linked to every LET lesson and can be tracked through a cadet's portfolio.

Course Competencies
JROTC course competencies are measurable skills, knowledge, and attitudes targeted in each lesson of the curriculum. Cadets demonstrate mastery of these competencies by making decisions, performing skills, providing services, solving problems, or creating products. Performance standards provide the specifications for assessing mastery. The competencies include leadership, citizenship, responsibility, character development, wellness, and communication. These are learned through various instructional methods.
